The Austin economy grew more than any of the largest of the nation’s cities, based on data between Q4 2008 and Q3 2009. Brookings Institution reported that productivity rose in just 5 of 100 major cities and Austin topped the list with 2% growth in the GMP (gross metropolitan product – the value of goods and services produced). Gedalia Partnerships LP, a Dallas-based developer, revealed grand plans for a $15 million mixed-use project on a 1.9 acre tract near East Seventh and Chicon streets, according to $15M East Austin plan will raze old warehouse, add shops, homes (Austin Business Journal, 1-1-10). Gedalia plans to raze an abandoned 10,000 square-foot warehouse in order to develop 85 apartments and approximately 18,000 square feet of retail space. In addition, Gedalia has obtained a construction permit for Sungari Pearl, a 52-unit condominium complex with 7,000 square feet of retail space in the same area. Both projects would complement the city’s overhaul of the East Seventh Street corridor from Navasota Street to North Pleasant Valley Road. Millions are being spent to expand the campus of Texas State University, located at 601 University Blvd. in San Marcos. A sum of $633 million worth of construction is slated to take place in the coming years to accommodate more students. St. David’s South Austin Hospital, located at 901 W Ben White Blvd., is getting a new name and undergoing a $72 million renovation. The renovation and expansion project to begin in April 2010 will increase the hospital by three floors, more than 100,000 square feet and 25 percent more beds. A suicidal man upset with the IRS deliberately slammed his single-engine Piper Cherokee into the Echelon Building located in the 9400 block of Research Blvd. (U.S. 183) in Northwest Austin. The pilot, Joseph Stack of Austin, along with a federal employee died in the crash. Echelon I houses offices for the Internal Revenue Service IRS) but it is not the location where tax returns are processed so it will not affect federal income tax processing. Military funds will fuel new construction in the Austin area. The Armed Forces Guard and Reserve Center at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is now in the design stage. The planned $16.5 million facility will span 250,000 square feet and is expected to replace an existing aviation support facility currently leased from the city. Plans also call for a $5.7 million Vehicle Maintenance facility. To ease overcrowding, a new $20 million Armed Forces Reserve Center is likely to be built at Camp Mabry.
